Going Green in 2008!
The theme for the 2008 National Collegiate 4-H Conference is “Rendezvous in the Rockies – Going Green in 2008.” The theme represents the history of the Rocky Mountains where the conference will be held and the traditional roots of 4-H. Rendezvous literally means to assemble at an agreed time and place, but the word holds special significance to this region of the country. It is a word with French origins used to describe the gatherings that the fur traders and Native Americans used to hold before the westward expansion. Rendezvous were held annually to trade goods, catch up on news, and make plans for the coming year. “Going Green” is being used to represent the traditional roots of 4-H including, leadership, service, community, self-improvement (head, hands, heart, health), and the spirit of friendship. As collegiate 4-Hers we cannot forget the basis that has made 4-H such a successful and important youth organization. This theme will also allow us to use workshops and tours from all aspects of the environmental world, from natural animal husbandry to organic farming and ranching, to research and development. People have become far more environmentally conscious to the world around them, and as such are more aware of the things our theme will focus on. This being said, we hope to use the National Collegiate 4-H Conference to make Collegiate 4-H members around the country more aware of issues facing the environment today and enable them to take that knowledge and apply it to their own projects in their own states. With this theme, we hope to be able to bring Collegiate 4-H members a new outlook on the projects that they participate in, and hopefully give them some new and innovative ways to address these issues themselves.
A National Collegiate 4-H Conference has been held annually since 1973. This is the third time that the conference has been held in Denver and Colorado State University's fourth time planning the conference.
